CHARLES AND EMMA FRYE ART MUSEUM
December, 1977

Easel miniatures - a unique and personal style of painting by Anatoly Krisochenko easily places him in the ranks of the Soviet Union's most gifted and original painters. He has created not only a completely new style, but has given them all them all the compositional, coloristic, textural and emotional qualities of easel painting, almost mitaculously re-creating them in incredibly small formats.

It is hard to believe that the human eye and hand are capable to producing such fine work. Like fine jewelry, these tiny paintings of fairy tale visions and legendary folk express the artist's unusual gift for the lyrical and poetic. When these miniatures are viewed an a screen from slides or as large prints, they give the impression of being large compositions; their true dimensions seem unbelievable.

Mr. Krisochenko is a native resident of Kiev, Ukraine. Encouraged by his parents, who were artists, he attracted attention at an early age. Like many of the USSR's most talented painters, he is a graduate of the prestigious Kiev Academy of Art, where he studied principally under Pyotr Kotov of Moscow. Although he has created brilliant works in the area of illustration, easel painting and large-scale murals, his most impressive achievement in the field of visual art are his easel-miniatures, which have amazed artists and critics of diverse aesthetic beliefs. Throughout his creative career, he has been a constant participator of major exhibits in the Soviet Union and his works are found in many state museums and private collections in the USSR.

Sergei Bongart, noted artist and teacher from Santa Monica, California, will be in the Museum on Sunday, December 4, to answer questions about this collection.
